Play Based Piano is operated by Decisive Marketing, a California corporation, of 25005 Blue Ravine Rd, Ste 110 #182, Folsom, CA 95630. By buying a membership or a product from playbasedpiano.com, you agree to what follows. We have written it in plain language on purpose.

Who this is for

Play Based Piano is sold to adults. You must be 18 or older to buy a membership or create an account.

Children do not use this service. The videos, the members’ area and Alexis AI are all for the parent or caregiver. Children play the piano from printed material. Do not create an account for a child and do not let a child use the members’ area.

What you are buying

A membership gives you access, for as long as you keep paying, to the materials we have released to your membership level: the books, the videos, the printable material, and Alexis AI.

Everything is digital. Nothing is posted to you. You download files and print them yourself.

We release material over time rather than all at once. We may change what is included, how it is organised, and when it arrives. If we make a change that materially reduces what you are paying for, we will tell you and you can cancel.

What you can do with the material

You may print it as many times as you like, for the children in your own household, for as long as you like. You keep the files you downloaded even if you later cancel.

You may not share, sell, post, email or upload the files to anyone outside your household, use them with students you teach, use them in a school, studio, church, nursery or class, or share your login. Teachers and schools: get in touch, we will sort out a licence.

We own the material, or we have the right to use it. Buying a membership does not transfer any of that to you.

Payment, renewal and price

  • Payments are taken by Stripe. We never see or store your card number.
  • Memberships renew automatically, monthly or annually, until you cancel. We will email you before an annual renewal.
  • Cancel any time from your account page or by email. Cancelling stops the next payment.
  • Prices are in US dollars and exclude any tax we are required to collect.

The founding price. Founding members pay the price they joined at for as long as their membership stays continuously active, even when the standard price goes up. If you cancel, that price ends with the membership, and rejoining later means paying whatever the price is then.

Alexis AI

Alexis AI is an artificial intelligence trained on Alexis’s own teaching material. It is not Alexis and it is not a person. It answers questions about the program.

  • It can be wrong. Use your judgement, and you are the adult in the room with your child.
  • It is not medical, developmental, psychological or educational advice, and it is not a substitute for a doctor, therapist or teacher. If you are worried about your child’s health, hearing, development or wellbeing, speak to a professional.
  • Conversations are stored and read by us so we can improve the program and write better answers. Do not put anything in it you would not want us to read. See the Privacy Policy.
  • We may limit, change or withdraw it. [IF THE NOV 17 GATE FAILS AND ALEXIS AI DOES NOT SHIP, THIS SECTION AND THE SALES PAGE BOTH NEED CHANGING BEFORE LAUNCH.]

Videos and photographs you send us

You may upload videos of your child playing, for milestones and celebrations. These are videos of a child, so we treat them carefully.

  • Only upload a video if you are the child’s parent or legal guardian.
  • By uploading, you give us permission to store it with our hosting and video providers, to view it, and to use it inside the members’ area if that is what the feature does. You keep ownership of the recording.
  • We will never use your child’s video in public marketing, on social media, or anywhere outside the members’ area, unless you give separate, specific, written permission. Uploading is not that permission.
  • You can ask us to delete an upload at any time, for any reason or none, and we will remove it within 30 days.
  • We do not sell uploads and we do not use them to train artificial intelligence.

What we do not promise

We do not promise any particular result. Children learn at wildly different rates and a lot depends on how often you sit down together. Nothing on this site is a guarantee that your child will reach any specific standard by any particular date.

You are the adult in the room. Playing the piano is a physical activity and you know your child. Supervise your sessions, stop if your child is uncomfortable or in pain, and speak to a doctor about anything to do with their hands, hearing, development or wellbeing. Nothing we publish is medical, developmental, psychological or educational advice, and it is not a substitute for a professional who can actually see your child.

We try to keep the site available but we do not promise it will never go down.

Ending an account

We can suspend or end an account that shares material or logins, abuses Alexis AI or our staff, or charges back a payment without talking to us first. Where it is fair to do so, we will refund the unused part.

Liability and law

We provide the service as it is. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses, and our total liability to you for any claim arising out of the service will not exceed the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. If you live somewhere that gives you consumer rights that cannot be signed away, you keep those rights.

[MATT: this is a conservative, standard clause so the page is not blank. It is the single section most worth paying a lawyer to review, because a limitation copied from elsewhere is the one most likely to be thrown out. California also has specific rules about what consumer contracts can limit.]

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States.

Changes

We may update these terms. If a change matters, we will email members. Carrying on using the service after a change means you accept it.
